Dry Rot: A Sage Adair Historical Mystery of the Pacific Northwest Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from doc peterson -- Great historical fiction and a complex mystery : There is a lot to love with Stoner's Sage Adair mysteries - the plotting and story telling is solid, the snapshot of early 20th century Portland is spot-one (particularly for someone who loves the PNW generally, and Stumptown specifically), the strong sympathy for working people and the labor movement that humanizes the characters. It is also particularly enjoyable to see a writer hit their stride in terms of creating a more complex story and in introducing new characters and situations for the protagonist to work in. In her third Sage Adai novel, Stoner has arrived. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anne Hendren Coulter -- Bridges to the Other Side : S.L. Stoner's third book in the Sage Adair historical mystery series, Dry Rot, has a unique tenor--it is filled with honest despair. As in the previous novels, lives are lost, sad stories unfold and strikers strike. Owing to "bosses'" cheapness bridges are poorly built; dry rot covers the wooden frames; wagons fall into the river. The timing of the Portland, Oregon historical novel is perhaps one of its most challenging aspects--bars are going up over the dramatic 1930s Vista Bridge after the fifth suicide in eight months. We struggle with the sad-eyed Daniel whose family is lost because of the bridge. But we have hope that souls will be saved because a twentieth-century rag picker will be around to inform his friends. I could not put the book down and it rings in my ears every time I cross the Vista Bridge. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Simone -- Excellent series : I have read all all the Sage Adair mysteries, and will continue to do so. Interesting plots and as a plus, you learn a lot about the history, from worker's point of view, of Portland. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from paris -- A well-researched/written series : Start with Timber Beasts and read on. This is a wonderful series. Number 4, Black Drop just out has a great take on President Theodore Roosevelt. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carolyn J. Rose -- Great sense of time and place : Terrific sense of place (Portland, Oregon), time (1902), and historical significance (labor unrest and changing social consciousness), with murder and mystery in the mix and a trip into Portland's shanghai tunnels as a bonus.
