:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from rkwnyc -- Don't buy this edition! : I don't know what Amazon has done, but the text in this addition is bizarre when compared to other editions. For example, where other editions use the word 'about' this edition substitutes 'approximately'. Initially I thought this was Willa Cather attempting to give the reader a sense of the difference of the language of the immigrants - but when I got tired of trying to figure out what was meant, I checked several other editions. Surprise! The other editions used 'about' instead of 'approximately'. There are a lot of other words that have been, for some reason, transposed incorrectly - but this gives you an idea of how bad the text is. I'm going to try to alert Amazon but of course it's hard to find out just how to let Amazon know it has a problem like this.... UPDATE: Amazon Customer Service granted me a refund after I sent them a picture of the problem, which one can see in the first paragraph where you will see 'approximately' instead of what other editions have in the same sentence ('about'). There are many other weird errors in this book - one of the most puzzling was 'paintings', which appears in multiple sentences about farming - maybe 'planting' was the actual word? Anyway, just don't purchase this until you no longer see 'approximately' in the second sentence of the first paragraph. There are lots of other versions of this book at a similar price that do have correct text - and if you read the correct text, it is an excellent book. It is a google translation with unintelligible sentences. Somebody made $3.99 off of me. My bad for not paying attention to the cover, which shows a girl with a messy ponytail and hoodie on a cliff - in the plains of Nebraska - in 1910. She has no choice but to make a go of it. As luck would have it, she has a true heart and steady mind that are up for the task. This is a brilliant look at just how difficult, and yet oft fulfilling, life was for the early pioneer. It's also a classic American tale: foreigner ventures to the New World willing to work hard to realize the American dream, building a community along the way. Nebraska was a hard country, and let down as many settlers as it accepted. Young Alexandra, born to Swedish immigrants, tries to instill in her family and neighbors the same tough skin at she's developed. Dowden -- Still Worth Reading : Wilella ‘Willa’ Cather is of course well known for her portrayal of frontier life, where the more intrepid persons carved out a life on the land and cultivated areas to create vast swathes of arable land. This novel, first published in 1913 gives us a quite interesting read of life on the prairie as we follow the trials and tribulations of the Bergson family. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Essexelle -- A little treasure…. : I read this as part of my book club - not my kind of book at all but I surprisingly thoroughly enjoyed it! The description of the land, the work, the life of an America which is all new is fascinating. It looks like it’s suffered some sort of translation back into English from another language and makes absolutely no sense.
